Discovering childhood in the early Middle Ages

The 68th study week dedicated to Childhood in the Early Middle Ages, initially scheduled for the week running from April 16 to 21, 2020, could not be held. Such a thing had never happened in almost 70 years, since we started organising conventions in Spoleto. The several emergency decrees the Italian government adopted since February 23, 2020 to curb the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic prevented the organisation of said conventions. Fondazione CISAM’s scientific council could only acknowledge that it was impossible to regularly hold the convention, hence staking on the longer-lasting role of books. The great amount of work carried out by the scholars involved allowed us to create this tome, which has finally been completed. It is the 68th volume in the “Study Weeks Documents” collection; however, those who have witnessed the genesis of this volume of the week that did not take place know that it shall remain the silent and – hopefully – the only testimony that research and study are capable of withstanding even the most woeful and unfathomable difficulties. A testimony that is also an omen: may this resistance be truly followed by a longed-for rebirth…
