History

The Centro italiano di Studi sull'alto medioevo in Spoleto was established on 7 June 1952 under the initiative of prof.
Giuseppe Ermini
, rector of Perugia University then Minister of Public Education.

Established in 1957 under an appropriate law as a lawful public body, CISAM is today, as a result of D.L. no. 419 of 29 October, a
Foundation with legal personality of private rights.
CISAM Foundation has it headquarters in the ancient Palazzo Ancaiani of Spoleto, which is unanimously considered to be the
world’s most prestigious place for holding conferences and interdisciplinary studies devoted to history and culture of the Dark
Ages (V-XI centuries).

All the most important scholars of this period have held their lessons in the study weeks that have now reached the 54th edition,
and which traditionally take place from Thursday after Easter until the following Wednesday.
Today, consistent with a policy of constant renewal, faithful to its vocation, CISAM Foundation, chaired by Enrico Menestò of Perugia University, also performs a brilliant publishing activity, including among its publication Series, Magazines and Periodicals, in a growing number, known and widespread not only throughout the entire scientific community, but also throughout
the increasingly numerous public of passionate students and lovers of medieval centuries.
