Until now, the history of Florence during the 13th century has been explored only in part by scholarly literature. This book focuses on a period of a few decades within that century, crucial to the understanding of later events, on which much closer attention has been paid so far. Thanks to an accurate prosopographical research, the book aims at outlining the social, economic, and political profiles of the different factions that contended for the city government during the 13th century. Besides, it concentrates on the institutional evolution of the Commune, highlighting the close connection between both aspects. The book addresses the features of the Primo Popolo – the leading group of Florence between 1250 and 1260 – and outlines its evolution throughout the following decades. At the same time, it describes its opponents: the milites in a first phase, the magnati afterwards. Key issues are the relationship between the government’s concrete political action, the social and economic composition of the leading group, and the endorsement of a certain political ideology. From the mid-13th century, Florence became a lively cultural laboratory. It is then that the interaction between influential intellectuals and the teaching of the Christian religion gave birth to a sophisticated ideology, which permeated Florentine society and guided the political action of the Popolo during the last decades of the century. Furthermore, economic, cultural, and political investigation of social identity restores to the institutional context its rich complexity. Such an analysis throws new light on the well-known events of the late 13th century and their protagonists.
