The aim of this book is to cast light over the process of formation and development of the rural lordship in central Italy (Umbria and Marche) in the period between 1000 and 1300. A short introduction is devoted to documentary problems and to the political framing of the period. In the second section of the book the themes are two. The first is how the different profile of the lords (little o great aristocrats, abbeys, bishops or even the empire) influenced in each case the form of the power over the land and the men. The second is how the lordships interacted with the other lordships and with the other political and social player of the region, such as urban and semi-urban communities, the papacy and the empire, with a focus on the management of conflicts. The last and mayor section of the book explores the lordship from within. The focus is on the texture of local power. The author works on the different level of the local power: the patronage of churches, the personal fidelities, the management of economic resources, the use of officials, the systems of legitimization. The relationship between lords and dependents emerges as a complex and multifaceted object of research.
